James Sanders & Conjunto at Embassy Theatre

In partnership

Welcoming Week is a collaborative effort to create inclusive spaces for all. The Embassy Theatre is excited to be one of many nonprofit organizations and community partners participating in this special week during September. Conjunto is James Sanders' long-running project to unite his classical training and theory with the freedom of jazz improvisation, all grounded in the lively rhythms of the Caribbean: rumba, son, danzón, bolero and more. The result are performances that move audiences figuratively and literally, where moments of hushed intimacy are followed by joyous dancing. From Afro-roots to salsa to jazz, Conjunto is equally at home at a dance party, jazz club or festival stage.

Gateways For Growth: Call To Action Meeting

Amani Family Services, Greater Fort Wayne, Inc., and Downtown Fort Wayne are partnering to explore ways to remove barriers that limit the contributions and advancement of all immigrants in our community. We want to share about this critical community work and seek your input.

We received a Gateways for Growth Challenge (G4G) grant that provides a competitive opportunity for localities to receive research support and technical assistance from the American Immigration Council and Welcoming America to improve immigrant inclusion in their communities. Fort Wayne is one of nine cities across the nation selected to participate in the 2023 G4G cohort to gather critical data needed to create a more welcoming, engaging, and equitable community.

This work will involve a community survey, focus groups, and work by key leaders to develop a 3–5-year Strategic Immigrant Integration and Inclusion Plan.

Please join us and other invested community partners to learn more about this year-long initiative and how you can support a new community survey and the creation of a transformational community strategic plan.

A light breakfast will be served.

World Refugee Day

Amani Family Services will host its annual World Refugee Day celebration at 5:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 20 at the Small Pavilion in Foster Park.

World Refugee Day is an international day to honor refugees for their courage and resiliency as they enter new communities. Since 2018, Amani Family Services has hosted a potluck celebration at Foster Park to recognize the unique multicultural community in Fort Wayne. This year, Stephanie Crandall, Director of Intergovernmental Affairs for the city of Fort Wayne, will read a Mayoral Proclamation commemorating Immigrant Heritage Month and World Refugee Day on behalf of Mayor Tom Henry.

The event will also feature a cultural performance from the Amaneceres de Mexico dance group, a Zumba demonstration and a personal story from a local refugee. Supporters can participate in our celebration by bringing a potluck dish to the event.

In addition to activities, Amani will invite event participants ages 18 and older to respond to the Gateways for Growth community survey. Amani has partnered with Downtown Fort Wayne and Greater Fort Wayne, Inc. for the Gateways for Growth (G4G) challenge, a year-long initiative addressing the concerns surrounding accessibility and equity. The survey can be completed online through SurveyMonkey.

Refugee Resettlement Programs

The U.S. State Department, in collaboration with the Department of Health and Human Services, recently launched the Welcome Corps. This new private sponsorship program will enable Americans over the age of 18 to directly sponsor refugees arriving through the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program (USRAP).

Check out the Welcome Corps FAQ page here.

For 17 years, Amani Family Services has been involved in supporting refugees who have newly arrived in our community. Through our challenges and successes, we have a deep understanding of the investment of time and resources it takes to ensure the safety and mental well-being of refugee families. While we cheer on the progress of creating more welcoming communities, we feel a responsibility to educate our neighbors on this new federal program and its impact on agencies supporting refugees.

Amani, in partnership with St. Joseph Community Health Foundation, Catholic Charities, and International House will host a presentation on Refugee Resettlement Programs at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, March 30 at Allen County Public Library. Reserve a seat here.

“As an agency with the history and experience of helping immigrants and refugees navigate the aftermath of resettlement, we are already working to prepare and educate our community about how this will impact the city,” Ewelina Connolly, Amani CEO, said. “We are partnering with St. Joseph Community Health Foundation, Catholic Charities, and International House to launch quarterly learning communities to provide a space for nonprofits, for-profits, and individuals to learn about some tools and resources for how we can be a welcoming community. Unlike the traditional resettlement process where we already have an expectation of new individuals for the year, this new program will bring an unknown influx to Fort Wayne and we need to consider how we can build capacity to serve those in need, especially when working with the healthcare and legal systems.”

Welcoming Week at Cinema Center

In Partnership

Doors open at 6 p.m., Film at 7 p.m. with post-film discussion

Cinema Center, 437 E Berry St # 1, Fort Wayne, IN 46802

Watch a selection of independent films that explore stories of immigrants and children of immigrants. A panel conversation with filmmakers, Amani Family Services, and local representatives will follow the short films.

The Knell

On his first day at an Oklahoman university, a student from Ghana with hopes of achieving the American Dream encounters a beautiful yet mysterious campus tour guide who sends him down a deadly path to an American nightmare.

Soyka

Anna, a young woman from Belarus, tries to survive in New York City while dreaming of a better life. This intimate portrait of an individual showcases the experience of the American immigrant: loneliness, fear, happiness, self-realization, and ultimately hope.\

Flora Linguis

An exploration of multilingualism, a small mess of colors, emotions, and thoughts, all in different languages.

The U.S. and The Holocuast

Combining the first-person accounts of Holocaust witnesses and survivors and interviews with leading historians and writers, The U.S. and The Holocuast dispels competing myths that Americans either were ignorant of the unspeakable persecution that Jews and other targeted minorities faced in Europe or that they looked on with callous indifference. The film tackles a range of questions that remain essential to our society today, including how racism influences policies related to immigration and refugees as well as how governments and people respond to the rise of authoritarian states that manipulate history and facts to consolidate power.
